BUILDING THE FUTURE
A PODCAST BY KADANS SCIENCE PARTNER
Building the Future
Inspiring conversations with innovators, trailblazers and bright minds
What will the world look like in 20 years? Will we still be eating meat? What role will robots play in our lives? How soon will we really have a fully self-driving car? In Building the Future, various experts discuss how they see the future. They will talk about the latest innovations, explore the social debate and try to create a picture of the future. Because no matter what we think, fact is that the world is changing. Therefore collaboration is essential for innovation.
By producing this podcast, Kadans Science Partner gives members of its community the opportunity to discuss the solutions and innovations they are working on.
#1 Campus Development: How to build a strong ecosystem
This special mini series about campus development is part of ‘Building the Future’. In this first episode we focus on ecosystems. Specifically, how to build a strong ecosystem. Developing campuses is way more than bricks and mortar: building a strong community requires time and effort from all parties involved. We learn about the different forms and definitions of innovation ecosystems and the value of strong collaborations. We also discuss how Kadans, together with its partners, puts this all into practise in the new Plus Ultra Leiden building at Leiden Bio Science Park. Host Rudy van Beurden discusses this topic together with 3 guests: Gwen van Overbeke (Governance, Communication & Branding Manager at Leiden Bio Science Park), Paul Jansen (Vice president of IADP) and Tom Straeter (Senior Ecosystem Manager at Kadans).
#2 Campus Development: Impact on societal challenges
This special mini series about campus development is part of ‘Building the Future’. In this second episode we’ll talk about the impact of campuses and science parks, focusing on societal and economic impact: why is it important? And what’s needed to create impact? How can campus management organisations measure and prove their impact? Campus Groningen is a great example and Edward van der Meer (director of Campus Groningen) will elaborate on their vision and the lessons learned so far. Edward van der Meer, Jacques van Dinteren (president of IADP) and Tom Straeter (Senior Ecosystem Manager at Kadans) join host Rudy van Beurden at the table.
#3 Campus Development: The most successful governance model
This special mini series about campus development is part of ‘Building the Future’. In this episode we’ll talk about various governance models. We try to find out what model is most successful, using innovation center At the Park in Rijswijk as an example. In addition, we learn why private and commercial investors are crucial for the success of campus development and the importance of strong public and private partnerships.Host Rudy van Beurden discusses this topic with Armand van de Laar (Alderman at the Municipality of Rijswijk), Jacques van Dinteren (President of IADP) and Michel Leemhuis (CEO of Kadans Science Partner).
#4 Campus Development: The future of innovation areas
Episode 1: In 20 years we will not eat meat anymore
That the production of meat has all kinds of downsides, is something probably everyone will agree on. That is why scientists and companies worldwide are investigating what a diet without meat looks like. Are we able to say goodbye to the steak on our plate? Are there any tasty alternatives with the same nutritional value? In this episode host Rudy van Beurden meets three experts who try to find answers to these questions: Marc Arts from Greenfood50, Ingrid van der Meer from Wageningen University & Research and Mateo Piano from Innogusto.
Episode 2: The hospital of the future will be your own living room
The technology that enables physicians to remotely monitor the health of patients is becoming increasingly sophisticated and offers a rapidly growing number of possibilities. As a result, it is no longer always necessary for patients to come to the hospital for a doctor’s visit or medical assistance. This is often more pleasant for patients, and it also saves considerable costs. Does this mean that in the future patients will no longer have to go to a hospital, and that they always can stay in their own homes when sick? Host Rudy van Beurden searches for an answer, together with three health experts: Waander van Heerde from Enzyre, Wanne Wiersinga from NL MoveUP and Koen van den Hurk from Health Valley.
Episode 3: Fully autonomous driving on public roads is possible in the future
Cars are taking over more and more tasks from drivers. Think of parking or driving on the highway. So, technically a lot is already possible when it comes to autonomous driving. But how realistic is it that in the future a car will take over all tasks from humans? Is it possible for a smart car to process the same amount of impulses as a human driver while driving through a busy city? Can an automated system make the same well-considered choices as humans. Host Rudy van Beurden explores the challenges of autonomous driving with three smart thinkers: Maarten Steinbuch (Scientific Director Eindhoven Engine), Olaf op den Camp (Senior Consultant TNO) and Gijs Dubbelman (Head of Mobile Perception Systems lab at TU/e & CTO AI in Motion (AIIM).
Episode 4: In 2040 our food is climate neutral
Our food system is a very complex system that consists of a worldwide network with millions of suppliers, farmers, transporters and factories. This is an energy-consuming system that often has a major impact on the climate and nature. Is there a way to feed the world’s population in a way that does less damage to our planet and is even completely climate neutral? Host Rudy van Beurden examines whether this ambition is realistic in a conversation with three leading experts in the field of food: Marjolein Brasz from Foodvalley NL, Liesbeth Luijendijk from OnePlanet Research Center and Jason Kiem from InsectoCycle.
Episode 5: Your next doctor will be a robot
If there is one area where technological developments are introduced at a rapid pace, it is the medical sector. A growing number of medical procedures are already being performed by robots and other forms of hyper-intelligent technology. Is this the beginning of an era where doctors are superfluous? Host Rudy van Beurden tries to find out. Therefore he has invited three health experts: Bram de Beer from Eindhoven Medical Robotics, Jasmijn Kok from Juno Perinatal and Roel Boumans from Behavioral Science Institute (BSI) Radboud University.
Episode 6: The race against cybercriminals is unwinnable
Online crime is now just as common and obvious as in the offline world: Ddos attacks, theft of personal data, phishing… and so on. But in our connected society, the stakes are often very high when computer systems fail. Online security is getting smarter, more efficient, and more robust every day. On the other hand, cybercriminals are also getting better and better. The big question is: who will win this race? Host Rudy van Beurden has invited three guests who are experts in the field of online security: Elisa Costante, Vice President of Research Forescout Technologies Inc., John Koot, Alliance Director OrangeNXT and Luca Allodi, Assistant Professor Eindhoven University of Technology.
Episode 7: In 20 years cell and gene therapies for cancer will be commonplace
Cancer is one of the world’s most devastating diseases. Its treatment can be punishing, and have several nasty side effects. Fortunately, scientists have a better idea now of how to treat it, and the experimental techniques being used now may be commonplace in the future. At least, that’s what many experts think. Host Rudy van Beurden has invited three guests who are experts in this field: Jacqueline Barry, Chief Clinical Officer at CT Catapult; Erik Manting, CEO at Immunicum AB, and Trudy Straetemans, Assistant Professor at UMC Utrecht.
Episode 8: A future without fossil fuels is an illusion
The search for renewable energy sources is gaining ground. Wind and solar energy have been familiar to us for quite some time, but there are countless other innovations that generate emission-free energy. The question we’ll try to answer in this episode is: will we really be able to say goodbye to fossil fuels in the future Host Rudy van Beurden has invited three guests who are experts in this field: Johan Knijp, Head of Section Flow and Fuel at DNV, Nick Hol, Head Project Manager of Team Solid and Olaf Adan, CEO of Cellcius.
