Pastoe Fabriek - Utrecht
To the point
since July 2012
Building and location
De Pastoefabriek, an industrial monument, is established in Rotsoord, an area between Ledig Erf and Hoograven. The complex is located along the Vaartsche Rijn waterway and borders the city centre, in a development district, offering good accessibility by foot, bicycle, bus, train, boat and car. The total floor area of the building is approx. 10,500 m² Furniture maker UMS Pastoe has since 1918 used the ground floor for production and storage purposes, while the Dutch Design Center/Toonkamer was long established on the first and second floor of the complex.
The current tenant is UMS Pastoe, an internationally recognised and renowned designers label in furniture. The brand has for 100 years represented simplicity, timelessness, quality and craftsmanship.
UMS Pastoe will in time relocate elsewhere in Utrecht, allowing the complex to be redeveloped into a meeting place for the creative sector. The Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU) will use the ground floor and first floor for providing visual arts courses to its students in Design, Art Education and Art and Economics. Central idea behind this education is to seek cross-overs between the various courses as well as cooperation with the creative industry. Room will therefore also be reserved in the Pastoefabriek complex for startups and incubators. The second floor will provide space for established companies in the field of (digital) design, architecture, advertising and communication, etc. Leases with several companies have already been concluded. With the second floor becoming available in the autumn of 2015, HKU will occupy the complex in phases, namely the first floor in January 2016, and the ground floor after the summer of 2016.
