Biopartner Center - Nieuwe Kanaal 7 Wageningen
The Food Valley incubator
About BioPartner Center Wageningen
One of the activities of Kadans Science Partner is the continuation of all activities of BioPartner Center Wageningen (BPCW), which was founded in 2011 as the catalyst and incubator of the Food Valley. The incubator lies in the heart of the Food Valley region, the food centre of Europe, and the most high-potential and innovative food cluster of its kind. Here, over 10,000 people are involved daily in research, development, education and business in the Life Sciences, Food and Health.
Kadans Science Partner develops, realises, lets and invests in accommodation for third parties. This explicitly includes specific made-to-measure housing for startups and young knowledge-intensive businesses, with the intention of giving them a low threshold access to the broad network of the Life Sciences and related sectors. Cooperation with Kadans Science Partner also enables fledgling businesses to benefit from the network of relevant local, regional and national government organisations. Gielen explains why this special group has more startup difficulties than in many other sectors: "To be very pragmatic: the need for investment is very high. There is plenty of office space available, but that is not enough for the startups in this sector. They require laboratory space, of which stringent safety requirements are made. Advanced research equipment is needed, and that too is very expensive." Part of the problem resolved by the proximity of the Wageningen University: businesses can make use of their highly specialised and expensive equipment.
With Kadans Science Partner and its network, startups, young and mature companies gain access to support, including coaching in the broadest possible sense. As co-initiator and partner of the Food Valley Ambition 2020 for the Food Valley, Kadans Science Partner focuses on Wageningen and the immediate surroundings.
But it is also increasingly active and visible throughout the Netherlands. Van Dijen: "We naturally gravitate towards the large universities. For that's where the researchers are, where they can find support and inspiration. And often buildings become available that are suitable for our purposes. But we also build our own facilities." Kadans has entered into a partnership agreement with Wageningen UR with the objective of attracting knowledge-intensive businesses and institutes to Wageningen. Moreover, Kadans Science Partner has an option to purchase over 5 hectares of land from Wageningen UR, located at Wageningen Campus, for the development of approx. 40,000 m2 of offices, laboratories and multifunctional R&D facilities. It is also involved in the development of science parks in Wageningen, the Food Valley region, other (university) cities in the Netherlands and for the Climate-KIC programme.
Kadans Science Partner provides service and supports its tenants wherever possible, e.g., in the form of:
- a location manager with experience in the field of property and the specific facilities required by knowledge-intensive businesses;
- investing and offering shared facilities in the Novio Tech Campus and at NXP;
- offering access to its broad network for attracting (business) financing or venture capital;
- supporting and/or participating in grant applications;
- providing an extensive support network for translating research results into viable business plans and management support.
